Program Description:

This workshop explores the evidence for why tropical rainforests are important to people, communities, wildlife and the environment. Forests give a home to animals, support biodiversity, cool the planet and manage the chemistry of our atmosphere. In this workshops will investigate why removing forest cover can be devastating to the environment and why rainforest conservation areas are so important.Participants will have the opportunity see firsthand about how the presence of plant life effects the stability of soil can be demonstrated and discussed. A) Introduction to Deforestation: In this section, we will cover the importance and roles of tropical rainforests, the global drivers of forest lost and the links between deforestation and erosion. B) The Experiment – Runaway Soil: This part involves a practical experiment, including looking at soil erosion as a result of deforestation and how plants help to keep soil on the land. Participants will engage in hands-on activities and a discussion to understand this topic better.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand why forests are important to people, communities, wildlife and the environment. Understand why deforestation causes erosion. Understand how trees help to cool the planet and manage the amount of greenhouse gas in our atmosphere. Gain experience in designing and conducting their own experiments.
