Inspired by Nature: Designing Characters

Program Starts at:

4:00 pm

Program ends at:

5:00 pm

Program Description:

Join Dr. Kendy Mitot in this engaging art workshop where participants will explore their creativity by designing unique characters inspired by Sarawak's local fruits and vegetables, such as Durian, Dabai, Terung Dayak, Rambutan, Salak, and Engkala. Drawing from the beliefs of Indigenous peoples, this workshop embraces the idea that every element of nature—human, animal, vegetable, mineral, and forces of nature like wind, rain, and rivers—possesses a soul or characteristic force. These souls coexist in harmony, infusing each object with its unique essence while connecting them as one universal soul. In this 1-hour session, participants will collaborate in small groups to transform these everyday natural elements into imaginative character designs. The workshop will guide you through a step-by-step process, starting with the head and moving through the body and legs, with each stage involving a creative exchange of drawings among group members. This interactive workshop will not only hone your artistic skills but also foster collaboration and provide a deeper appreciation of Sarawak's rich natural heritage. By the end of the session, you'll have created vibrant, stylized characters and shared your unique artistic expressions with fellow participants, celebrating the universal harmony and interconnectedness of all living things.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Participants will learn to express their creativity by transforming everyday objects, like local fruits and vegetables, into unique character designs. 2. Through the drawing exchange process, participants will enhance their collaboration and communication skills by building on each other's work without prior knowledge of the previous designs. 3. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation of Sarawak’s local fruits and vegetables, integrating them into their artwork and fostering a connection to local culture. 4. Participants will experiment with various artistic techniques, including color mixing, texturing, and pattern creation, to develop their own distinctive styles.
